Retired Americans: Sununu’s Senate Ambitions Are a Clear Threat to Social Security
Washington, D.C. — Richard Fiesta, Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans, issued the following statement in response to former President Donald Trump expressing support for former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu to run for U.S. Senate in 2026:
“Of course, Donald Trump wants Chris Sununu in the Senate.
“Sununu can barely contain his excitement at the idea of coming to Washington to team up with Elon Musk and dismantle Social Security — stripping New Hampshire workers and retirees of the guaranteed, earned benefits they have paid into for a lifetime.
“A longtime advocate for privatizing Social Security and raising the retirement age, Sununu has repeatedly downplayed the risks of granting tech billionaires like Musk access to the most sensitive personal and financial data held by the Social Security Administration. He even said, ‘what Elon is doing is actually pretty darn good.’
“Thankfully, as governor of New Hampshire, Sununu had no control over Social Security or Medicare. But if he runs for Senate, he’ll quickly discover that Americans of all ages want to strengthen Social Security — not weaken it. That starts by asking the wealthiest Americans to pay their fair share, not by cutting benefits or raising the retirement age.”
